What is an Expungement?
Whenever someone is charged with a criminal offense in North Carolina, that charge is public record. That information can be seen by anyone, including potential employers, landlords, or universities. An expungement is the processes of deleting all the information related to a criminal charge from your criminal record.
Who is Eligible for an Expungement?
North Carolina’s expungement statutes are complex and it’s important to speak with an attorney to determine if you are eligible for an expungement. As a general rule, expungements are only available if you were found not guilty at trial, or your case was dismissed by the district attorney. There are exceptions to this rule, however, such as being under 18 at the time of the conviction, or if a certain amount of time has elapsed without acquiring new charges.
