Generally, there are two simple requirements:
- You paid into the Social Security system over a number of years working.
- You are unable to work for a period of 12 months or more.
- Age matters. For those 50 years and older, the requirements are somewhat less strict to qualify for Social Security Disability.
If you are unable to work and applied but were still denied, don’t get discouraged; this is very common. The Social Security Administration appeals process is available but can be overwhelming without help. Denied claims can still be approved after an appeal and hearing.
